Education
Education within language technology/computational linguistics is divided into undergraduate studies and graduate studies. Undergraduate studies at Swedish universities are based on a system of credit points, where one credit point corresponds to one week of full time study, i.e. 40 hours a week. 20 credit points are equivalent to one semester. The academic year consists of two semesters of 20 weeks each: the autumn semester, which runs from the end of August to mid-January, and the spring semester, which runs from mid-January to the beginning of June.
The nominal time for a doctoral degree in Sweden is four years (160 credit points) and for a licentiate degree two years (80 credit points). Since many graduate students spend 20 per cent of their time on teaching, it normally takes about two and a half years for a licentiate degree and about five years for a doctoral degree.
